What version should we play? When it comes to being a DJ at a wedding, the average DJ will find himself asking the same question: Which version should I play? It could be the short edit, the quick hitter, or any one of 8 different remixes you will find of Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees. This has never been a question for me. When I think about Rob Base’s It Takes Two, one of my all time favorites, I do not think about any of the remixes. I think about the original, the one that I first heard riding in the back of a bus coming home from a Ridley High School band competition, when I was first becoming a DJ. If you think about it, your brain works the very same way. And so do most people. When it comes to that question of which version should we play, we will almost always choose the original. There are a few songs where the remix surpassed the original and is the most popularly recognized version, such as R. Kelly’s “Ignition” Remix or Mike Posner’s “I Took A Pill In Ibiza”. In these instances, with input from our bridal couple, we will choose based on a few factors. To begin with, what does the happy couple actually want? Remix? Original? That is the single most important part of every decision, not just a particular song. Secondary to that is what will actually work best with the crowd, which again will be based mostly on the preference of the couple. They know their friends and family. We do not. Which Version Should We Play? The one that will make the best memory, will fit the crowd, and is the one the couple wants to hear. When choosing your wedding dj, make sure you ask these questions. Actually, you really should write down a list – the old fashioned way, using a pencil and paper – of questions and be sure to ask them all!
